About the project
Any new legislation takes time to have impact, and that assumes that it is effective in measuring the right metrics to achieve that impact. However with the first Australian Modern Slavery Act statements due in 2020, we have time to make use of UK MSA statements from in-scope Australian companies to help set the benchmark a year earlier than possible without it. Because Australia has a very well established commitment to Open Government, the identities of companies with their turnover above the AU MSA threshold ($100M) are already mostly known (and published annually, 12 months after year end). This makes it easy for us to provide the necessary data for research partners to sink their teeth into. All we need is a little seed funding and the right partners to create a report that can set the standard higher even before the first statements are submitted.
